Indo-Pacific Environmental was engaged by Water Corporation to assist with the management of Carter’s Freshwater Mussel (Westralunio carteri) which are protected under state and federal legislation, during the Vasse Diversion Drain upgrade project works. To facilitate the large scale earthworks required, IPE developed and implemented a management plan to ensure mussel protection, which resulted in the relocation of over 35,000 individuals by IPE staff and community volunteers. IPE also developed and implemented the project’s Water Quality and Monitoring Management Plan which aimed to ensure protection of regionally valuable ecological assets including the Carter’s Freshwater Mussel population and the seagrass meadows of Geographe Bay by defining water quality assessment criteria, and appropriate management responses in the event of trigger value exceedances.
